Remembering Jenny

The time came to let our sweet Jenny go. It was one of the hardest decisions we've ever had to make but, in the end, the seizures got the best of her and we didn't have a choice. We had to do what was best for her- not for us. So, we loved her up all Easter weekend and made her comfortable and cozy. We cuddled with her and sat with her and told her we loved her. Oh, did we love her... our baby girl.

Jenny came into my life in 1999- at 8 weeks old- she was a tiny ball of fur. She lived a blessed life: she travelled, camped, hiked and lived mostly like a human until the very end. She loved lettuce and carrots, loved walks and laying in the sun. She hated haircuts and baths and being left alone. Every one who met her, loved her. She was adorable, sweet, docile, loyal, friendly, calm, quiet and unbelievable. A dog like Jenny, only, comes around once in a blue moon.

On, Monday, April 25th 2011, we brought Jenny to the vet hospital where we sat with her and let her go peacefully. We held her and whispered to her the whole time. She knew she was loved. It was heart wrenching and it was sad, but she was finally at peace.

Good-bye my baby girl. May you run free. Oh, how you'll be missed. I love you, Jenny.

I came across this poem which, has helped us come to terms with our tough decision:

The last battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this, the last battle, can't be won.

You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.

We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.

Take me to where to my needs they will tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you will agree,
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.

Don't grieve that it must be you,
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close, we two, these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.
